What I learned from ”The Sandman” power items?

Recently, I got the opportunity to watch the Sandman Series on Netflix and I think that its content is very related to investing. For starters, the main character Sandman is in charge of the dream world where people reside when they sleep. In this dream world, you basically are exposed to every possibility beyond the confines of reality. As such, we can say that things that happen in the dream world, need not make sense, which is extremely similar to the investing world. In today’s post, we will look into 3 significant items from the film that we can reference from and relate to everyday investing.

The Dream’s Helm (power to invest in virtually anything)

The helm basically allows the user to travel throughout the ”dreamworld” and therefore gain access to every event that happens without having to worry about time and space. This is especially similar to the investing world, where people are able to invest in virtually anything from anywhere. This opens up so many questions and curiosity but also at the same time leaves many unanswered questions. Yet, people are still brave enough to venture into almost every kind of asset class and asset. With this ”power” in the palm of our hands, we are often tempted by greed and adventure and thereby putting ourselves into compromised positions. Actually, it takes way more than just the news and some numbers on the screen to determine if a particular investment is worth its risk.

The Sandbag (The ability to take away sleep forever)

This item is frightening as it is able to take away the entire concept of rest from a human. Does it already ring a bell? Remember those sleepless nights when the market is ravaging your investment portfolio? While investing cannot necessarily prevent you from sleeping, you can be robbed of the peace that is required to rest even when you are lying on your bed at night. Investing in the market is like this because it does not have any consideration for investors. All it does is constantly tempt and frighten us in the hope to make us do a wrong move. From this example, we should understand the dangers of being an investor as most of us are only familiar with the benefits of investing.

The Dreamstone (The definition of reality and reason)

The Dreamstone is by far the hardest to make sense of but it also has one of the most straightforward power. Basically, Dreamstone allows the bearer to decide on what is reality, and how the series shows its power is by its bearer forcing everyone to be honest to one another forcefully. Within a short period of time, everyone started to turn against one another and eventually society itself was torn apart as there was no longer any reason to lie about how we feel just to get by our daily challenges. In essence, this is extremely similar to investing because assets that are heavily invested in are basically treated as extremely valuable on the news as well as in the minds of the majority. This is similar to saying that the investing world holds the dream stone and it can affect reality to bend accordingly to what it deems as important and deserving of the world’s attention.

Closing thoughts

We can draw relationships between different forms of realities because everything is basically made of a combination of sensible and nonsensical components. This teaches us that investing is no different from trying to outsmart something that is neither smart nor not smart. Hence, if you really want to be an investor that can consistently outperform the market, be humble and only take part in the areas that make real sense to you.
